Chapter Forty-Three

After a trembling walk to clear my head, it was straight back to my room without talking to Dad. My migraine wasn’t getting any better. It was only a little after nine, but I was completely drained and in shock.

Vera’s death just didn’t seem real.

When my fingers brushed the bronze lighter in my pocket, I had to yank them away as if scalded by a hot stove. Tonight, even contact with its cold metal was too cruel of a memory.

There must be some mistake. She can’t be dead.

All I wanted was to curl up in bed and forget this night ever happened. I stared at my pathetic bare mattress. After my episode last night, I had stripped the bed and stuffed my covers into the dresser, but it was supposed to be cold tonight. This was getting ridiculous.

Come on, Chan, you’re afraid of your own sheets?

Pulling the covers out of my dresser, I tucked the fitted sheet around the corners of my mattress and let the flat sheet drift down, then I spread out the blanket. Letting out a sigh, I climbed into bed.

But I found myself back in the ambulance, lying on a gurney, Vera beside me. Engulfed in a giant white raincoat with the hood pulled up, the paramedic’s back was turned.

“Excuse me, sir, can I ask you a question?”

But the paramedic just yanked open one of the drawers of medical supplies that lined the walls of the vehicle.

“Excuse me, sir,” I repeated.

He raised his right hand, concealed by a black rubber glove, and depressed a hypodermic needle. Clear liquid squirted from its end.

“You shouldn’t be awake,” the paramedic said. “Why don’t you lie back?”

I jolted, back in my bed again, sweating and out of breath. I looked around my bedroom and swallowed. I hadn’t remembered closing my eyes, but I must’ve dozed off without realizing it. The arching shadows of my bedroom seemed to close in around me. My heart thudded like a tribal drum announcing a human sacrifice.

I had to regain control, to push these thoughts away, but every time I had this vision, it came with a growing awareness that it wasn’t just my imagination—or even a recurring nightmare.

What if that was something I’d tried to expunge from my memory because it was too traumatic to face? What if it was real?

“Open up!” an android commanded from the hall outside our apartment. “This is the Department of Order! Chandler Vail, come out with your hands on your head!”
